Clayoquot Sound Surf Kayak Expedition (11 Days):
Pre-Expedition (3 Days)
Days One - Two:
-Get to know each other including an introduction to the expedition and program.
-Equipment fitting and discussion on preparing for the expedition, which includes packing, food, safety and overall plan.
-Lake water Kayaking which will include introduction to kayaking, techniques, safety, boat knowledge, equipment overview, handling skills, communication and overall safety precautions.
Day Three:
-Overall expedition preparation which will include discussions on packing, organization of equipment, group food preparation, transportation, meeting times, individual responsibilities and overall idea of what to expect during expedition. Also, peoples will be divided into tenting/cooking groups.
Expedition (8 Days):
Day One:
-Bus transportation from Vernon, British Columbia to Tofino on Vancouver Island (approx. 10hrs) (Ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo, BC)
-Evening at Environmental Youth Hostel in surfing town of Tofino.
-Group organizations, unpacking and clarification of next days plan.
Day Two:
-Transportation Via bus to Tofino wharf from Hostel (10mins.)
-Board First Nations Water Taxi service to Island (specific island is determined by variety of factors, approx. 50mins.)
-Unload supplies on sandy island beach and prepare base-camp site.
-Safety discussion in regards to environment
-Discussion of natural and Native history in surrounding area.
-Walking tour of surrounding area.
Days Three Five:
-Kayak surfing, skim-boarding, body surfing, beach volleyball and various beach related activities.
-Beach day hikes and rainforest exploration
-Hike to Native Village and visit with local First Nations artists, story tellers and elders.
-Exposure to First Nations culture, art, technologies, langauage, etc.
-Marine environment studies
Day Six:
-Water taxi to Hot Springs Cove for hiking and bathing in natural hot marine pools
Day Seven:
-Pack-up base camp and return via water taxi to Tofino.
-Tour Tofino for shopping, sightseeing and meeting locals.
Day Eight:
-Return to Vernon, BC
-Debrief
